Free Online Word Counter and Text Analysis Tool
Word Counter is a free online word counter designed to help you measure and review written content while you work. Paste an existing text or write directly in the editor to instantly check the number of words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs. The tool also estimates reading time and analyzes keyword density, giving you a quick overview of both the length and structure of your text.
No account, registration, or sign-in is required. You can open the tool and start working immediately in your browser, whether you need a quick character count for a short message or want to examine a much longer article, essay, draft, or document.
Count words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs
A word counter is useful whenever written content needs to fit a particular length or you simply want a clearer picture of how much you have written. The main word and character totals update as you type, while the statistics panel provides additional counts for characters without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs.
These measurements can be useful for essays with word limits, articles and blog posts, application forms, reports, product descriptions, social media copy, emails, documentation, and other writing where length matters. Character counting is especially useful when a platform or form imposes a character limit, while sentence and paragraph counts can help you examine the overall structure of longer text.
Work with multiple texts in separate tabs
Unlike a basic word counter that handles only one piece of text at a time, this tool lets you keep up to five texts open in separate tabs. Each tab has its own text, statistics, and editing history, so you can move between drafts without replacing what you were already working on.
Tabs can be renamed and rearranged, making it easier to organize different versions or related pieces of writing. For example, you can keep an original draft in one tab and a revised version in another, then switch between them to compare word count, character count, paragraph structure, reading time, or keyword usage. This can also be useful when comparing several headlines, descriptions, introductions, summaries, or alternative versions of the same text.
Check keyword density while you write
The Keyword Density panel shows which words appear most often in the current text, together with their frequency and percentage. This provides a quick way to identify repeated terms and see how prominently particular words are being used.
Keyword density can be useful when reviewing articles, landing pages, product copy, SEO content, or any text where repeated terminology matters. It can also help reveal accidental repetition. The results are best used as a writing aid rather than a target to maximize, since clear and natural language is generally more useful than forcing the same keyword into a text unnecessarily.
Estimate how long a text takes to read
Word count can also provide a practical estimate of reading time. As your text changes, Word Counter calculates an estimated reading duration based on its length. This can be helpful when preparing articles, guides, presentations, scripts, newsletters, or other material where you want a rough idea of how much time a reader may need.
A more comfortable workspace for longer writing
The editor is designed for more than checking a number and leaving the page. You can increase or decrease the text size, adjust line height, and switch between light and dark mode to make longer writing or editing sessions more comfortable.
The statistics panel can also be collapsed when you want more horizontal space for the editor and opened again whenever you need to review the counts. This makes it possible to use the same page as both a focused writing area and a detailed text counter.
Edit, undo, copy, and organize text quickly
Each tab includes its own undo and redo history, so changes made in one text do not interfere with another. Standard keyboard shortcuts can be used for undo and redo, and lines can be duplicated with a keyboard shortcut when working with repeated text or alternative phrasing. The current text can also be copied in full with the Copy All button or cleared when you want to start again.
Who can use an online word counter?
A word and character counter can be useful for students checking essay length, writers preparing articles or stories, editors reviewing drafts, bloggers and content creators working on web copy, marketers comparing headlines or descriptions, and anyone preparing text for forms, emails, documentation, or social platforms.
It can also be useful during revision. Keeping multiple versions in tabs makes it easier to compare a shorter rewrite with the original, check whether an edited paragraph actually reduced the word count, or see how different wording changes keyword frequency and overall reading length.
Free word counter with no account required
Word Counter is free to use and does not require an account. You can begin typing or paste text directly into the editor, open additional tabs when you need to compare or organize multiple texts, and use the built-in statistics to review your writing as you work.
